LONDON -- Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc, the degradable plastics and waste-to-energy Group, has signed up one of the world’s largest food producers, Tiger Brands of South Africa, as a customer for its oxo-biodegradable plastic additive.

Symphony’s d2w™ additive makes plastic degrade completely in a pre-set time-span, from as little six months onwards, leaving no fragments, no methane, and no harmful residues. There is little or no extra cost.

Albany Bakeries of South Africa, a subsidiary of Tiger Brands will be using d2w for all its bread-wrappers. It has a substantial share of the national bread market and owns 12 major bakeries that produce Albany Superior; Olde Cape ; D’light and Everyday bread ranges. Albany is the group’s biggest user of packaging.

Tiger Brands is one of the largest food producers in the world to commit to reducing the potential for plastic pollution by their packaging.

Meghan Draddy, Tiger’s packaging development manager for grains: cereals; milling and baking, said.: "We are pleased to announce our ground-breaking co-operation with Symphony Environmental to protect the environment from the accumulation of plastic waste.

"Tiger Brands has become South Africa ’s first national food company to tackle the litter and plastic-waste pollution unavoidably resulting from bakery operations.

"Up to 3,000 tonnes of potential litter and waste per year will now degrade and then biodegrade, within a short timescale."

Commenting on the product launch, Michael Laurier, Chief Executive of Symphony said: "We are delighted to be announcing this major environmental breakthrough jointly with Tiger Brands.

"In addition to bread bags, our oxo-biodegradable technology can make degradable plastic bags, heavy shrink-wrap packaging and plastic bottles self-destruct completely within a period of between 6 months and two years (depending on environmental conditions) instead of polluting the land and the sea for decades."

SYMPHONY ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES PLC is a world leader in oxo-biodegradable plastic technology. In the last 12 months it is estimated that more than 5 billion plastic products have been made with Symphony’s d2w® pro-degradant additives.
